Perfume boss admitted he ignored Russian sanctions | Weekly Words of Wisdom
A British businessman, David Crisp, was caught on camera admitting to illegally selling luxury perfume, despite Russian sanctions. He told an undercover investigator he had “ignored government edicts” by selling the perfume, priced at £1,000 a bottle. Despite his confession, the BBC reports that he is not facing criminal charges.
He was arrested in 2023 by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for sanctions violations, including concealing over £1.7 million in illegal sales. However, the investigation was dropped earlier this year, despite the evidence against him.
Sir Iain Duncan Smith, chair of a parliamentary committee on Russian sanctions, criticised the UK’s enforcement of sanctions, stating the David Crisp case is not an isolated incident.
He described the UK’s prosecution efforts as “very poor” compared to countries like the US, which are “light years” ahead. Sir Iain emphasised the need for arrests, prosecutions, and incarcerations to ensure sanctions are effective.
He also highlighted HMRC’s tendency to settle cases rather than impose significant fines or pursue criminal convictions, arguing that prosecuting smaller violations is crucial to deter larger breaches.
