UK to launch sanctions regime to catch smugglers

In 2025, the UK government will introduce a ground-breaking sanctions regime aimed at dismantling people smuggling networks and cutting off their illicit funding.  

Announced by the Foreign Secretary, the legislation will target those involved in facilitating dangerous migration journeys, marking the world’s first standalone sanctions system of its kind.  

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to regain control of immigration, combat organised crime, and strengthen UK border security. 

The UK’s new sanctions regime will target organised networks profiting from vulnerable individuals attempting migration, including perilous sea crossings in Europe.  

Government sanctions experts will collaborate with law enforcement and the Home Office to disrupt financial flows, deter smugglers, and prevent the exploitation of innocent people.
